| Headline: | Biofuels: a summit meeting for Africa |
| Description: | CIRAD and the International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering (2iE-Groupe EIER-ETSHER) are organizing an international conference from 27 to 29 November 2007 in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), entitled 'Stakes and Perspectives for Biofuels in Africa'. 'This conference will enable players, decision-makers and funding agencies to meet up and discuss the potential of biofuels in Africa'. The conference organizers are keen to highlight the opportunities for and environmental and socioeconomic impact of biofuel production in Africa. This international conference, chaired by the Burkina Faso government, is being organized under the aegis of the WAEMU (West African Economic and Monetary Union) and ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States). Plenary sessions and round tables are also planned, to demonstrate the impact on food production, water, soils and biodiversity as a whole. The aim is in fact to draw up biomass use strategies that respect the environment and food crop production systems in each African country. |
