Headline: And now to bioenergies... CIRAD is taking part in ENERGAÏA!
Description: Under its remit for development in the South, CIRAD, in association with CEMAGREF, will be presenting its latest research on energy production from biomass, at the ENERGAÏA International Renewable Energies Exhibition, to be held from 6 to 8 December 2007 at the Montpellier Exhibition Centre.
Biomass, can be converted into energy: heat, electricity or fuels, depending on its type and on requirements. As far the particularly burning issue of biofuels is concerned, CIRAD has considerable experience of studying and using first-generation fuels, and is now involved in developing a second generation. These new fuels have a high potential yield per hectare planted, and can be produced from wood or agricultural residues in the specific environmental conditions and smallholder farming systems found in developing countries. In response to the economic constraints on developing countries CIRAD and its partners are working on an original scenario. It consists in converting biomass into a liquid locally, to cut transport and supply costs. For instance, so-called 'flash' pyrolysis can convert biomass into bio-oil, with an energy yield of almost 70%.
